I made the decision about one month ago to join Audible via Amazon. At my current "Gold" membership lever I pay $14.95 per month for one book credit per month and have the ability to "roll over" six credits. I'm enjoying the service so much that I may end up moving up to the next level if I find myself consuming books more quickly.
Part of the reason I'm enjoying Audible so much is because of the first books I've chosen. I have noticed that I'm more anxious to exercise or do housework because I can listen while doing so. I've enjoyed my books on long road trips and most especially while lap swimming (stay tuned for news on how I do that later this week!). I've listened to books on CD in the past, but now love the flexibility of Audible's cloud-based service to listen across multiple devices any time, anyplace.
My first completed Audible title is Divergent, the first in a trilogy by Veronica Roth. I missed the book entirely (black hole? how??) when it was released in 2011 but it came highly recommended by friends and seemed to be a good compliment to the non-fiction titles I'm also reading with Audible.
While labeled as a sci-fi book for teens, the book gripped me from the outset. I'll skip the plot description here and simply comment on the audiobook quality. At eleven hours and eleven minutes, the book was an excellent value for my Audible monthly credit. The narration by Emma Gavin truly brought the characters to life. Her's is the voice of main character "Tris" in my mind -- gutsy, brave, and ultimately selfless... When I see the movie (which I plan to do) I will probably have a hard time hearing this strong female lead voiced by another actress.
The pace in the audio production of Divergent is perfect for my style of listening: gripping, and yet easily digested in multiple listening sessions. I can't sit and listen for eleven straight hours, but I found it very easy to enjoy this book over the course of a few weeks. I do expect to put Insurgent into my queue for future listening.
Your turn: Do you listen to audiobooks? Did you read Divergent or see the movie? What did you think?
