My children are young, however I am blessed to have 30 nieces and nephews. One reason I joined FB was to be a solid Catholic presence in their online life. Yes, to keep tabs on them and make sure they were portraying and living the truths of christian virtue in all venues. I too have been conflicted by the things that my "friends" from high school post.

We need to be very discriminating in who we allow to view our sites and who we befriend, definetly not a recruiter. He is using it as a work tool, not a personal aquaintance of our children.

On future employment...when my husband was interviewing for a position as a prosecutor, the first thing they did was Google his name! Unfortunately, someone with heavy metal music and ???? came up. NOT my husband, but it is a lesson on the view we give the "WORLD" on the www. The information is not easily removable and there is a vast amount of storage space. I thank God that this was not available when I was young. I did not have the monitoring that I currently help in providing for my extended family and their friends.

I joined Facebook to keep track of my son (also a 12th-grader applying to colleges now.) I threatened him with loss of internet privileges if he did not make me his "friend." And I occasionally let him know I've visited his page. Same with my daughter (8th grade). I do remind them that they should not put anything on FB or anywhere on the internet that they wouldn't want their grandmother/school principal/pastor/future employer reading. Unfortunately, you can't control what your friends write....that's the toughest part!
