Eric, the sixteen year old, is pursuing a new passion as he has begun Bass lessons. So now, several afternoons a week I am serenaded by the sonorous notes of scales and exercises. These low hums vibrate the drum set that sits in our music room and rumble the nearby photos on the walls. They run counter to his normal, perky mandolin notes. They remind me of chocolate, of cigar smoke, of strong coffee.
They are the sounds of a dream being pursued. They occasionally sound melodious. Their halting pace bespeaks my son's work ethic as he strives to hit just the right note. To a mother's untrained ear, they are lovely.
Isn't it wonderful when our children find a new dream and pursue it with energy and enthusiasm? The dream may be soccer, singing or stacking legos. Regardless of what it is, be sure to capture your child's enthusiasm and to enjoy the moments of pure, unbridled passion for something new. Sure, next week the dream may be something new...and isn't that one of the things that makes life so wonderful?
